Tools & connectors not working

Fix connection test failures, unused tools and failing image or search tools.

When a tool or MCP connector doesn't do what you expect, check these in order.

"Tools are not supported for this model"

The selected model can't call tools. Pick another model in the model selector - most flagship models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google support tools.

The AI doesn't use the tool

  • Make sure the tool is listed under Selected Tools (tools) or switched on under MCP Connectors (connectors) for this chat.
  • Ask more directly: "Use Web Search to find..." or "Check Linear for...".
  • Improve the tool's description - the AI decides when to use a tool based on it.

"Connection test failed"

"Connection test failed. Please check the server URL and authentication settings."

  • OAuth connectors: click Reconnect and sign in again. Tokens can expire or be revoked.
  • Token connectors: check the token hasn't expired, and that it's in the right field (Bearer Token vs API Key).
  • Custom connectors: check the Server URL, including the /mcp path, and the Server Type (HTTP vs SSE).

The connector works but returns nothing

The connected account may not have access to what you asked for. Check its permissions or scopes in the service itself. For Atlassian, a site admin has to enable API token access first.

Image generators fail

  • DALL-E 3 needs a valid OpenAI API Key with billing set up.
  • Stable Diffusion needs a StabilityAI API Key with credit.

Open the tool in Tools → Installed → Tools to update its key.

Web Search fails

Check both the Engine ID and the Google API Key, and that the Custom Search API is enabled in your Google Cloud project.

Deep Research says it needs a search tool

Install Web Search or Wikipedia Search, or enable a connector that can search. See Deep Research.
